What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small metal screw that serves as a replacement for a missing tooth root. During a brief surgical procedure, a Dentist in Brantford, ON will insert the implant into your jawbone, where it integrates with the bone over time. Once this process is complete, a restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture, will be placed on top of the implant to restore the look and feel of your natural tooth. Implants provide a stable, permanent solution for missing teeth.

Getting dental implants is a significant decision, but with proper guidance, you can make an informed choice about your treatment. We’re here to help you understand everything about the process so that you can feel confident moving forward.

Why You Might Need Dental Implants

Losing teeth doesn’t just affect your smile’s appearance it can have far-reaching consequences on your oral health. A gap in your smile can cause other teeth to shift out of alignment, increasing the risk of further dental issues. Missing teeth also result in bone resorption, where the jawbone starts to break down due to the lack of stimulation from tooth roots. This can cause a sunken appearance in the face and may affect the structure of your smile.

Dental implants are the best way to combat these issues. By replacing missing teeth, they restore both the function and structure of your smile, helping prevent the negative effects of tooth loss and maintaining the integrity of your jawbone.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Losing a tooth can make us feel self-conscious, but the benefits of replacing it with a dental implant are undeniable:

  • Restore Your Natural Appearance: Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. They’re custom-made to blend seamlessly with your smile.
  • Confidence and Comfort: Once an implant is placed, the titanium post fuses with your jawbone, creating a secure foundation. Whether you’re eating, laughing, or speaking, you’ll never have to worry about your implants shifting.
  • Bone Strength: Implants stimulate bone growth, preventing the atrophy that typically occurs after tooth loss. This helps maintain the strength of your jaw and facial structure.
  • Long-Term Durability: With proper care, dental implants can last for decades, providing a permanent solution for missing teeth.

Dental Implant Restorations

The restoration is the visible part of the dental implant, the “false tooth” that covers the metal post. There are several restoration options depending on your needs:

  • Dental Crown: Used for single-tooth implants.
  • Dental Bridge: Covers multiple missing teeth with one or two implants supporting the bridge.
  • Implant Dentures: Implant-supported dentures offer better stability than traditional removable dentures, securely clipped to the implants.

No matter which restoration you choose, we’ll ensure it blends perfectly with your natural teeth, giving you a beautiful, functional smile.

What to Expect on Your Dental Implant Treatment Journey

The process of getting a dental implant involves several steps, but the result is well worth the effort.

Assessment

Your journey begins with a consultation where we’ll take X-rays and a 3D scan of your jawbone to assess its condition and determine if you’re a good candidate for implants. We’ll also discuss your goals and plan your treatment accordingly.

Inserting the Implant

We’ll administer a local anesthetic to ensure you’re comfortable. Then, the Dentist in Brantford, ON will make a small incision in your gums and place the implant into the jawbone. Sometimes, sutures are required to close the incision.

Finalizing the Restoration

After the implant integrates with your jawbone over the next few months, you’ll return to our office to have your restoration placed. Once in place, you’ll leave with a fully functional and natural-looking tooth.

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Cost of Dental Implants in Brantford

In Brantford, the cost of a single dental implant typically ranges from $3,000 to $6,000. Full-mouth reconstructions can cost between $6,000 and $60,000, depending on the number of implants required. Implant-supported dentures generally cost around $30,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including:
  • The number of implants required
  • The materials used for your restoration
  • The complexity of your case
  • The expertise of the dental team

We’ll provide you with an accurate quote during your consultation and discuss your insurance coverage options. It’s important to have a full examination to determine the best treatment plan for you.

Are There Other Solutions for Missing Teeth?

If you’re missing a few teeth, a dental bridge or removable dentures may be an alternative to implants. However, dental implants are often the better long-term solution due to their durability and natural feel. With implants, you don’t have to worry about the discomfort or maintenance that comes with dentures.

While the initial investment for dental implants can be higher than bridges or dentures, their security and longevity make them the most cost-effective option over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

No one will be able to tell that you have dental implants. The implant itself is hidden beneath your gums, and the restoration on top is custom-designed to match the color, size, and shape of your natural teeth.

Dentures sit on top of the gums, while implants are fixed below the gumline, providing better stability and strength. While both options have their benefits, implants tend to offer a more permanent and comfortable solution for most patients. For a more personalized recommendation, come in for a consultation, and we’ll help you determine the best option for your needs.

For patients who aren’t candidates for implants, alternatives like dental bridges and full or partial dentures may be viable options. We’ll explore all available solutions during your consultation and help you make the right choice for your oral health.

Absolutely! Your dental implants will be topped with custom-made crowns, bridges, or implant-supported dentures that are shaped and colored to match your existing teeth and bite. You’ll hardly notice the difference between your natural teeth and new implants.

Thanks to advancements in dental implant technology, the procedure is now relatively pain-free. We’ll take great care to minimize discomfort, swelling, and bleeding. If you’re feeling anxious, just let us know – your comfort is our priority.

Most patients can return to work the day after surgery. We’ll give you a more accurate estimate once we know the details of your treatment. We’ll also go over post-operative care instructions with you.

To keep your implants successful, you’ll need regular cleanings and exams, just like with your natural teeth. We recommend check-ups every 6 months, but this may vary depending on your specific needs.

Take care of your implants like you would your natural teeth, brush, floss, and get regular cleanings. Let your doctor know if you have any issues.

Nope! Dental implants are designed to last a lifetime. You won’t need to replace them unless there’s a specific issue.
